Saturday Youth Classes are Now Enrolling

It’s time to enroll for Fall 2022 Term — Classes will be online, plus in-person Cultural Events!

We will be doing our usual, 17 week term mostly online; but we’ve scheduled out four times for the school year (twice this term) where we plan to hold cultural events at our host institution the Buddhist Church of Sacramento. We will be providing a variety of classes for elementary aged to high school students who have little or no prior knowledge of the Japanese language.

Classes will be taught by our native Japanese Sensei and will be based on having two periods each week.  One class will be focused primarily on Japanese as a second language, while the second will be focused more on Japanese cultural information.  Unlike other conversational Japanese classes, Japanese alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana) and Kanji will be taught to the students.  Students will be instructed how to speak Japanese, as well as how to read and write it.

Sakura Gakuen Spring Term: COVID-19 Update

Sakura Gakuen Announcement:

Dear Sakura Gakuen Students, Sensei, and Friends,

We hope you are doing well during these remarkable times.   As you know, in response to health concerns, our March classes had to be suddenly cancelled and all our classes began the transition to online, distance learning using email, Zoom, and Google Classrooms as our Sensei scrambled to change their curriculum to match.

We had hoped to re-open Sakura Gakuen for in-person classes at our host institution The Buddhist Church of Sacramento in April 2020, but as you know the COVID 19 situation continues to evolve.  The BCS made the decision to remain closed through June, as well as cancel their annual Bazaar and Obon festivities.

In light of this, the Sakura Gakuen Board of Trustees has made the following decisions that we hope will best serve our Community during this period of social, academic, and economic challenges.

  • All in-person adult and youth classes for the Sakura Gakuen 2020 Spring Term have been cancelled. Classes will continue to be available through the end of term for weekly, online distance learning taught by the students’ current Sensei.  This is not ideal.  And in recognition of this and understanding the economic impact shelter in place edicts have placed on our Community, we will extend full tuition reimbursement for the 2020 Spring Term to any student / parent that makes a request.
  • All Sensei will be paid for classes and online training through the end of the term.
  • Sensei will be provided training to encourage a variety of different medium (e.g. Zoom, Google Classroom, email, etc.) for class.
  • All volunteer requirements for the Spring Term will be considered fulfilled for Youth classes.

Fall Term 2021 classes will be finalized in the upcoming months.  Please stay tuned to our website and FB pages for more information.  Thanks to everyone for your patience and consideration during this very difficult time.  We appreciate the strength of our community and look forward to seeing you all back in school when classes resume.

Best wishes.

— The Sakura Gakuen School Board of 2019-20
