Sakura Gakuen Saturday Class Syllabus

Students who took the end of both semester tests will receive a certificate at the end of every school year, but the students whose teacher thinks he or she has not achieved the class goal will stay in the same class level next school year. Students will graduate after completion of the 8-year course of instruction at Sakura Gakuen.

Sakura Gakuen has 6 class levels and they are as follows:  Junior Introductory, Beginning, Intermediate, Senior Introductory, Advanced, and Bilingual.

Goals of each class are:

  • Jr. Introductory Class – for students with a minimum age of 6 years and older who are just beginning to learn Japanese.  Textbook “Yasashii Nihongo Introductory”
  1. to be able to recognize Hiragana
  2. to be able to recite Hiragana in the right order
  3. to be able to write all Hiragana before the end of the school year
  4. to be able to carry on a simple conversation
  5. to be able to read and write 12 Kanji, based on Sakura Gakuen standards
  • Beginning – for students who have completed Jr. Introductory or Sr. Introductory class or who have demonstrated a proficiency level equal to that of Jr. or Sr. Introductory class student. Textbook “Yasashii Nihongo” Elementary
    1. to be able to read Hiragana including “daku-on” and “handaku-on”
    2. to be able to write Hiragana including “daku-on” and “handaku-on”
    3. to be able to recognize Katakana
    4. to be able to read and write Katakana
    5. to be able to introduce oneself simply with one’s name, age, where lives, etc.
    6. to be able to answer simple questions in Japanese
    7. to be able to respond to teacher’s requests in Japanese
    8. to be able to ask questions in Japanese
    9. to be able to read and write 49 Kanji, based on Sakura Gakuen standards
  • Intermediate – for students who have completed Beginning class and Jr. or Sr. Introductory class or who have demonstrated a proficiency level equal to that of Beginning class students.  Textbook “Yasashii Nihongo”
  1. to be able to read all Hiragana including “daku-on”, “handaku-on” and “yo-on”
  2. to be able to write all Hiragana including “daku-on”, handaku-on” and “yo-on”
  3. to be able to read all Katakana including “daku-on”, “handaku-on” and “yo-on”
  4. to be able to write all Katakana including daku-on”, “handaku-on” and “yo-on”
  5. to be able to read and write 88 Kanji, based on Sakura Gakuen standards
  6. to be able to make statements with using proper Verb conjugations
  7. to be able to make questions with using proper Verb conjugations
  8. to be able to answer questions properly with different tenses
  9. to be able to ask questions with different tenses
  • Sr. Introductory Class – for Junior High and High School students who are just beginning to learn Japanese.  Textbook “Adventures in Japanese I” Chapter 1 through 8
  1. to be able to recognize Hiragana
  2. to be able to understand the meaning of basic Japanese words and expressions
  3. to be able to understand basic Japanese grammar
  4. to be able to read words and sentences written in Hiragana
  5. to be able to write words and simple sentences in Hiragana
  6. to be able to exchange greetings in Japanese
  7. to engage in basic classroom conversations in Japanese
  8. to introduce 49 Kanji based on Sakura Gakuen standards
  • Jōkyū –for students who have completed Intermediate class, Beginning class and Jr. or Sr. Introductory class or who demonstrated a proficiency level equal to that of Intermediate class students. Textbook “Adventures in Japanese I” chapter 9 through 15
  1. to completely read all Hiragana including “daku-on”, “handaku-on”& “yo-on”
  2. to completely write all Hiragana including “daku-on”, “handaku-on”& “yo-on”
  3. to completely read all Katakana including “daku-on”, “handaku-on”& “yo-on”
  4. to completely write all Katakana including “daku-on”, “han-daku-on”& “yo-on”
  5. to be able to read and write 157 Kanji, based on Sakura Gakuen standards
  6. to improve conversational use of Japanese

Attendance Rules for Credit Students
(Only high school students are eligible to apply credit)

The first semester after entrance into Sakura Gakuen is not applicable for credit.  Students will be able to obtain credit with letter grades of “B” or higher after they complete the first semester.

When students miss a total of 9 hours per semester, he/she cannot obtain credit for that semester.  If the student fails to follow the rules, he/she will not be able to obtain the credit.
